Yoga and Scoliosis

With Narelle Carter-Quinlan

Narelle Carter-Quinlan is a biomedical scientist, dedicated Iyengar Yoga practitioner and international presenter on Yoga and Scoliosis.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), which seemingly develops and is first recognised in adolescence, is reported in the literature to affect 2 - 4 % of the population. Much remains unknown about the etiology of this spinal configuration. However, there are common patterns in the musculoskeletal, physiologic and neural landscapes of these individuals. Significant considerations include, curve increment over time (progression), spinal element degeneration and quality of life.

In this presentation Narelle, will discuss the profound changes within the body's terrain that the individual with AIS inhabits.

Narelle will explore
· the alterations in the respiratory mechanism and experience;
· neural, vestibular and proprioceptive anomalies;
· imbalances within the skeletal, discal and muscle elements, including gait parameters;
· consider the relationship of the body in gravity

This presentation will explore how a Yoga practice can change a person’s experience of scoliosis.
