Amy Weintraub

The Love in the Room - Yoga Skills to Enhance the Therapeutic Relationship

Amy Weintraub has been a pioneer in the field of yoga and mental health for over 20 years. She is the author of Yoga for Depression and Yoga Skills for Therapists: Effective Practices for Mood Management. In this presentation you will learn to enhance the therapeutic bond and empower your students to manage their moods. Using evidence-based practices and case examples, you will learn how to assess and identify anxious clients who may benefit from a calming yoga breath like Brahmari Bee breath that is also helpful for ADHD, OCD, and can lead directly into meditation and, assess and identify depressed clients who may benefit from an energizing yoga breath like the Power Hara and an easy meditation with mantra and imagery that helps them focus.

Sal Flynn is a Yoga therapy educator, psychotherapist and mindfulness trainer who works with people living with the affects of trauma. Josephine Key is an internationally acclaimed, neuro-musculo-skeletal physiotherapist and author of a text book on back pain. In this presentation you will learn what the Fundamental Patterns of Control of the spine and pelvis are which underpin healthy function, to better recognise the common patterns of compensated control in the pelvis and spine in basic postures, identify the ‘missing links’ necessary for building more healthy patterns spino-pelvic control and better understand why your patients have lower back pain and/or pelvic pain.

Pauline Jensen (Dr.)

Yoga and ADHD

Dr. Pauline Jensen is a Special needs teacher, Yoga teacher, researcher and the co-author of a study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders, The effects of Yoga on the attention and behaviour of boys with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Her study found that the boys who did Yoga showed decreased emotional liability, restlessness, and impulsive behaviour. In this presentation, you will learn ways to approach teaching yoga to young people with behavioural disorders, how behavioural disorders, stress and breath are linked, and learn about research showing the effect that reducing breathing rates has on those with behavioural disorders.

Janet Stevens

The Healing Power of Sound

Janet Stevens is a Living Yoga Treasure and is one of the few Australian Yoga teachers to have completed the Vedic Chanting at SKY (Sannidhi Krishnamacharya). In Janet’s presentation, you will learn how sound and mantra can be used as an effective tool in Yoga therapy. Chanting assists in bringing the mind to a state of complete attention and can be used as a powerful tool to bring about healing and transformation. You will learn about the nourishing benefits of chanting and experience simple asana, pranayama and meditation practice using healing chants. You will develop your listening, concentration, and memory skills.

Margery Hellman

Yoga for Cancer in the hospital system - Improving Quality of Life

Margery Hellman is a Yoga Therapist , Feldenkrais Practitioner and Occupational Therapist who teaches Yoga at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse cancer hospital. In this presentation, you will learn about the stages of cancer and treatment, the benefits of Yoga for people living with cancer, Yoga practices that are useful for cancer and, how a Yoga therapist can overcome the challenges of working in a hospital setting.

How our addiction to technology is slowly killing us and what we can do about it

Jason Bawden-Smith is the Managing Director of JBS Technologies (JBS) a biophysics research and business development company. JBS looks at issues of human well-being through the lens of a physicist, applies the findings akin to an engineer and shares the solutions like an entrepreneur. Jason holds both a Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Health and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science from the UNSW. During his short career in academia Jason published eleven peer-reviewed papers including three in the prestigious Medical Journal of Australia. Jason is an author and speaker and has presented at numerous national and international environmental conferences.

Rosalba Courtney (Dr.)

Breathing and the Big Picture – The Functions and Dysfunctions of Breathing

Dr. Rosalba Courtney is a breathing therapy and breathing dysfunction specialist, osteopath and naturopath. Breathing has some key secondary functions determined by the way it interacts with multiple systems in the body to support, regulate and modify their functions. These secondary functions of breathing are the key to a understanding why breathing is such a powerful tool for healing and why dysfunctional breathing can have such a broad impact on health and wellbeing. In this presentation, Rosalba will discuss the primary and secondary functions of breathing and describe how dysfunctional breathing is multi-dimensional with separate and overlapping components. She will show us how we can practically recognise some key signs and symptoms of dysfunctional breathing and interpret what they can mean for yoga practice.

Leanne Davis

Restore the Flow of Prana for Health and Healing

Leanne Davis works as a Yoga teacher and Yoga therapist, Yoga teacher and therapy trainer and Acupuncturist. She is the Vice President of Yoga Australia. Leanne will examine the Pancha Prana Vayu model that outlines the Five functional divisions of Prana in the body. Ill health in the body-mind occurs when the flow and function of Prana becomes obstructed in its corresponding Vayu. The Yoga therapist equipped with an understanding of how Prana operates is able to restore good health by removing whatever is obstructing the movement of Prana. You will learn the location and function of each of the five, functional divisions of Prana, the physical and mental signs of Prana obstruction in each Vayu, methods of removing the obstruction of prana, how to apply Asana, Pranayama and Dhyanam to restore circulation of Prana, and an experiential practice of Mantra and Chanting for each of the Vayus along with breath, movement and reflection.
